Hibernate On/Off: Fix the Missing Power Option in 2 Minutes You open your Windows Start menu to click Power. You want to hibernate your PC. But the Hibernate option is missing. Only Shut down, Restart, and Sleep are there.
Do not worry. Your computer can still hibernate. The option is just hidden. You can turn it back on in less than two minutes. Why Use Hibernate?
Hibernate is different from Sleep mode. Sleep saves your work to your computer’s RAM. It still uses a little bit of power.
Hibernate saves your open apps and documents directly to your hard drive. Then, it turns your computer completely off. It uses zero power. When you turn your PC back on, everything opens right where you left it. It is perfect for saving battery life on laptops. Method 1: The Quick Control Panel Fix (Most Popular)
This is the easiest way to bring back the missing button. You will use the classic Windows Control Panel.
Open Search: Click the magnifying glass on your taskbar. Type Control Panel and press Enter.
Change View: Look at the top right of the Control Panel window. Set View by: to Large icons. Open Power Options: Find and click on Power Options.
Click the Secret Link: Look at the left side of the window. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
Unlock Settings: Look at the top of the new screen. Click the blue link with a shield that says Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Check the Box: Look at the bottom under Shutdown settings. Check the box next to Hibernate. Save Changes: Click the Save changes button at the bottom.
Open your Start menu and check the Power button. Your Hibernate option is back! Method 2: The 60-Second Command Prompt Fix
If the checkbox in Method 1 was missing or did not work, Hibernate might be turned off completely in your system files. You can turn it on with one quick command line. Open Search: Click the magnifying glass on your taskbar. Type CMD: Type cmd into the search bar.
Run as Admin: Do not just click it. Right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Click Yes if a box pops up.
Type the Code: Type this exact text into the black window:powercfg /hibernate on Press Enter: Hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
The black window will just move to a new line. That means it worked! Close the window and check your Start menu Power options. Still Not Working?
If you tried both steps and still do not see the option, your computer might have InstantGo or Modern Standby. Some newer, ultra-thin laptops use this instead of traditional hibernation.
